In the holidays I came across a reading that depicted trends that have influenced how technology is changing and there are implication for what we do in learning and teaching. These were:
1. Mobility
We know now that as we move forward, education will become increasingly mobile. Tablet popularity has more than tripled in the last year.
2. Connectivity
Cloud computing helps unify content and activity on the devices people use as they access their information and communities. Gradually we will hopefully see educational applications rely this to support seamless learning opportunities for students.
3. Openness
Last year I was able to participate in an online course with 36 000 other students around the world. It was free, allowed me to access and complete at anytime and provided a connected community that provide peer feedback. It was an enjoyable and memorable learning experience Over the last few years there has been an explosion of free, online educational resources. This allows all communities access to ever growing information and experts.
4. Collective intelligence
“Crowdsourcing” is all about creating communities, usually temporary, to contribute ideas, links or materials that would otherwise remain undiscovered. Hopefully collaboration and contribution outside of school domains will be included more in learning processes.
Soon the next Horizon Report will guide emerging technologies that will have an impact over the going years in education. A great video that looks at these trends is share by Dr. Ruben R. Puentedura.
