I recently had the pleasure of reading an inspiring book, recommended by a colleague. It was called 'The Ethics of Excellence" by Berger. Schooling is not a delivery system, it is an experience. It is through these experiences deep learning can occur. Berger encourages in his learners the art of craftmanship- integrity, knowledge, dedication, pride, careful thinkers and the ability to do things well. To create a spirit of ethics there should be a culture that encourages collaboration and quality. This should not be viewed as a short term project- it should be your way of being.
Continually we hear in our new curriculum the importance of high expectations for all students, Berger see this as critical. The work of excellence can be transformational. He illustrates this with many practical examples.
In the classroom community we need to leverage the power and ability of peer teaching/ critiquing and support. Creating a community culture will allow all students to celebrate an invest more authentically in learning, a spirit that encourages inquiry to learn from all members.
